These treasures are enough to tempt the purist health nut! pardon the pun

They remind me of when Amy and I were doing some Kolya business in New York last year. We came upon “Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups” at Wholefoods, and Amy told me how amazing they were. It became our daily, guilty pleasure for our short little trip, and we have struggled ever since to get them into Canada. Well now we don’t have to…

From one of our favourite blogs, to you – Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
3 Tbsp. melted cacao butter
¾ cup raw cacao powder
1/3 cup raw honey
2 Tbsp. lucuma (optional – add 2 Tbsp. of maca or cacao powder if not using)
¼ tsp. sea salt
extra sea salt for garnish, if desired. A good, flaky salt is best.

Nut Butter Filling:
1/2 cup almond butter (or any nut butter: cashew, pecan, hazelnut…)
1 Tbsp. raw honey (or maple syrup)
1 Tbsp. lucuma powder (optional – add 1 Tbsp. of sweetener if not using)
sea salt to taste

Directions:
1. In a double boiler (or a glass bowl over a pot of simmering water) melt coconut oil and cacao butter. Add honey and whisk to combine. When completely uniform, remove from heat and sift in cacao, lucuma and add sea salt. Taste for sweetness and saltiness, and adjust accordingly.
2. In silicon or paper muffin cups spoon enough liquid chocolate to cover the bottom (the amount is up to you – I kept mine rather thin). Place in the fridge or freezer and cool until solid, about 15 minutes. Remember that you are only using about 1/3 of the chocolate at this stage.
3. Make the nut butter filling (you can find recipes here for almond butter and hazelnut butter) by combining all of the ingredients until a “dough” is formed. Add more lucuma if it is too wet and runny. Taste for salt. This dough should be quite salty, but if you are using store-bought nut butter with added salt, don’t go overboard.
4. Spoon the nut dough into ½ tablespoon amounts, roll into balls, and flatten between your palms to just under the size of the chocolate in the cups.
5. Add nut butter filling to each cup on top of the solid chocolate and drizzle the remaining liquid chocolate on top, making sure to cover the filling completely. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired. Place in the fridge to harden for at least one hour.
5. When you have patiently waited, try removing one of the forms from the nut butter cups. If the chocolate sticks at all, return to the fridge until completely solid.
6. You can keep the chocolates in their forms or remove them, but either way store the nut butter cups in the fridge in a sealed container. Enjoy!

Let us know what you think.
Living Libations products are simple, but so, so lovely. When I first found them while visiting Toronto, I thought how easy it would be to make them myself, but the more I played with them, and the more I used them, I realized there was a unique alchemy to their skincare. Plus, my hair loved their Shampoo and Conditioner above all others – go figure.

They are well known for their holistic dental products, focused heavily on healing and promoting tooth and gum health. I was surprised at how well their under arm deodorants work (amusingly called Poetic Pits), because the only ingredients are undiluted sandalwood, cardamon and fir.

White Willow bark’s chemical profile boasts nine phenol glycosides (salicin, salicortin, 2-aceylsalicortin, populin, tremulacin, salidroside, triandrin, picein and helicon) AND esters resulting in salicylic acid. Also part of the chemical constituents of Salix Alba’s are flavonoids; tannins (procyanidin); B1, B2, B5, B6. Unique to Salix Alba is the 2-acetylsalicortin found only in this species of willow. This “herb” additionally possesses sisymbrifolin, a lignin normally present only in the Litchi Tomato.

Salicylic acid can also be found in Wintergreen, Peppermint, Spearmint, Meadow sweet, Birch, Devil’s Claw, Chamomile, Yarrow, Arnica and Feverfew and many other foods.

Prior to the 1890s White Willow bark was commonly used to combat fever, inflammation and pain. In the 1890s science made way for the synthesizing of salicylic acid, a component of Salix Alba (White Willow). The synthesized product is acetylsalicylic acid.

Use of Salix Alba as a treatment for gout and inflammatory joint disorders is attributed to Hippocrates and Dioscorides of ancient times. The North American Indigenous people made use of Willow bark as an analgesic. Throughout history White Willow bark has been used in various parts of the world to subdue fevers of all types, including rheumatic fever and to alleviate pain, inflammation and gout. In ancient practice, the powdered root was decocted (a fancy way of saying extracted by boiling) and used in the management of chronic diarrhea, dysentery, to assist recovery from prolonged illness and as an antiparasitic. The bark was similarly used.

Today many herbalists continue to use White Willow bark as an analgesic, to prevent bacterial proliferation, as an anti-emetic, to reduce inflammation, to alleviate fever, as an antiseptic and astringent, to clean injuries to tissue, to encourage sweating and as a diuretic. It also possesses mild blood thinning properties, stops headaches, eases menstrual cramps and can be useful to interrupt or prevent recurrence of disease symptoms (for example malaria).

It is considered a tonic herb (meaning it is used to restore normal tone and function), which may be why our ancestors found it useful for recuperation.

Science now recognises that White Willow bark eases pain and reduces in-flammation very effectively. Recent research indicates that Salix Alba demonstrates antioxidant activity and seems to exert a positive effect on immune function.

Medicinenet.com advises, “Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and non-prescription medications you may use, especially of: “blood thinners” (e.g., warfarin), drugs for high blood pressure, “water pills” (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide), aspirin or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen). Check all medicine labels carefully, since many contain pain relievers/fever reducers (NSAIDs/aspirin/salicylates) which are similar to this product. Consult your pharmacist regarding safe use of similar products.” http://www.medicinenet.com We are advised by the University of Maryland Medical Center as follows, “Because of the danger of developing Reye syndrome (a rare but serious illness associated with the use of aspirin in children), children under the age of 16 should not be given willow bark.” Naturally those who are allergic or sensitive to salicylates (Aspirin) should not use White Willow bark. The University of Maryland Medical Center further suggests that sufferers of “asthma, diabetes, gout, gastritis, hemophilia, and stomach ulcers” are not good candidates for the use of White Willow bark.

For further information and a list of possible side effects and potential conflicts with medications you are encouraged to visit the University of Maryland Medical Center website at http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/willow-bark-000281.htm#ixzz2JV7Jibjr

It is important to note that much of the information on contraindications and interactions is based on research involving the synthetic acetylsalicylic acid. Natural salicin is not linked to digestive upset or the bleeding associated with the synthetic, single component, version (aspirin). White Willow bark is a complex therapeutic “food”, comprised of many constituents, as are all food substances. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a single constituent, which has been synthesized. It has been scientifically observed that although White Willow bark may take a bit longer to reduce pain, its results last longer. Many medical physicians in Germany find that by using the natural White Willow bark along with the synthetic single component, Aspirin, they are able to reduce or avoid common side effects. Perhaps next time you find yourself suffering with a headache or inflammation, you may decide to try White Willow bark.

According to a 90 study published in Alternative Medicine Review, researchers compared the effects of Neptune Krill Oil (NKO) to fish oil based on multiple markers of PMS symptomology. This study was also done against analgesics for pain inflammation. Seventy subject past puberty were required to ingest 2g of krill daily or 2g of fish oil daily for the first 30 days of the trial. Questionnaires were taken and analyzed levels of analgesic medications taken in spite of krill or fish oil consumption. In the Neptune Krill Oil group, the consumption of acetaminophen was decreased from 1.2g to 0.9g; the consumption of ibuprofen was reduced from 2.5g to 0.6g by the NINTH DAY OF THE STUDY! Overall, analgesic intake from taking NKO was reduced by 50% after 90 days.

It should be noted that there are no known toxicity levels for krill oil.

“Odours have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions or will. The persuasive power of an odour cannot be fended off, it enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it.”
― Patrick Süskind

Having grown up on a ranch, the perfume of the prairies is a primary element of my childhood memories. Sage, wild roses, wet earth, and a building we called “The Shop”, which was full of lots of oily farm machinery are all included in my long list of favorite scents.

When I was 11, I moved to Edmonton with my family and quickly became desensitized to all of the synthetic fragrances around me. I began to forget “how things really smelled” and the more I surrounded myself with these scent impersonators, the more I began to lose sight of my Country roots. While my mom acted as if she was under the attack of mustard gas every time we walked through the perfume section of a department store, I was embracing these chemical potions with open arms. It wasn’t until my late teens that I started to re-connect with essential oils, as perfumes at first, and later on for their therapeutic qualities. One of the first blends I made, and continue to wear today consists of vanilla, neroli, patchouli, lavender, and lime; it is uplifting while still being grounding and it fills me with pure bliss every time I smell it.

The death of my grandmother marked the beginning of my ongoing relationship to scent as a method of therapy. During this time I discovered several essential oils which helped immensely to comfort me and ease my anxiety. Sage, spruce, and lavender were my best friends throughout this difficult time in my in my life. Over the course of the day, I would add these oils to a spray bottle filled with purified water and mist them around my body while focusing on my breathing and then at night I would put them into a bath or onto a hot compress. Doing this kept me present, grounded, and helped me sleep soundly.

I would highly recommend incorporating essential oils and perfumes into your life. Start by creating your own blend of oils; it may surprise you how transformative it can truly be. By discovering which scents you like as well as dislike, you are one step closer to achieving a deeper understanding of self, and, if nothing else, you’ll smell great!

In our hectic lives, I think it is a matter of self-preservation to partake in a regular, pampering, nourishing ritual. In fact, many of us at Kolya like to gather and share how we are caring for ourselves at home, and what botanical items we are using in the process.

One of my favourite self-care rituals is inspired by a spa treatment I had at a Hammam in Vancouver, named Miraj. I was escorted into a steaming marble room with vaulted ceilings where I sat alone, in silence. I was then exfoliated from head to toe with a special soap and glove. To nurture my freshly softened skin, they applied intoxicating scents from Pure Attar Luxurious Oils (created by Jennifer, who co-ordinates the spa). The experience propelled me deeply into my senses, and I dwelled in the Hammam until my natural rhythms paced themselves to an inner calm.

Other than the marble walls and the Moroccan décor, I have been able to recreate the experience of the exotic at home. I strongly suggest giving it at try…

Soak in an aromatic bath to soften your skin. Add flower petals and scented oils of your choosing.

While soaking, make a purifying face mask with Amal’s Moroccan Lava Clay.

When your skin is feeling moistened, use Amal’s Black Soap, which releases a revitalizing aroma of Eucalyptus. This product helps the skin release the surface layer of skin cells and is key to prepare your skin for the upcoming, deep exfoliation.

When you have built up a good lather, it is important to use Amal’s Mitt (a special exfoliating “keesa” glove) to remove the dead layer of skin. (These gloves are amazing, and I am so grateful to now have one at home. Yet please note, as lovely as it would be to feel baby soft all the time, such an exfoliation should only be done every 1-3 weeks).

After rinsing with warm water, the most perfect end to this indulgence at home is to apply Pure Attar Luxurious Oils. Though they are simple aromatic combinations, they are some of the most exotic and sensuous scents I have enjoyed. I especially like to layer her different oils to create a custom scent of my own. My much-loved combination is Star if Istanbul with Oil of Damascus. It is a delicate and earthy mix containing oils such as coriander, vetiver & clove.

Amal also has a 100% pure organic Argan Oil that is absolutely delicious for moisturizing your face.

The evening would of course not be complete without fitting music, a decadent treat and lovely tea, to feel completely restored.

Enjoy…

Nicola

”As a rule of thumb, use 2 to 3 tablespoons of the ingredient mixture for each gallon of water used. 1 gallon is typically a perfect amount for a large single foot bath in a large bowl or basin. As for water temperature, decide based on your own personal preference, but for me, getting it as hot as I can stand usually yields the most relief. Plus, the water cools off fairly fast, so you want at least five solid minutes of real heat.

#1: Mix together 1/4 cup of lemon juice, 1/4 cup of milk, 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, and a sprinkle of Cinnamon. Mix well, add to water, and enjoy – will leave your feet feeling super soft and nourished.

#2: Steep 4 bags of chamomile tea in 1 gallon of hot water for 10 minuets, then mix in 4 drops of the essential oil of your choice (we recommend peppermint, lemon, orange or eucalyptus). Put some marbles or smooth stones on the bottom of the basin for an extra relaxing mini foot massage!

#3: Mix 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of epsom salts and the contents of 3-4 peppermint tea bags. Use a couple of tablespoons of this mixture in a gallon of warm water for a soothing and refreshing foot soak to cleanse and strengthen the skin of your feet.

Remember to moisturize your feet afterwards with a nourishing natural body oil or moisturizer to trap all that clean goodness and keep your skin soft throughout the day!”

Did you know that our staff chooses all the products that we use and sell in Kolya Naturals? We experience, investigate, and rate all product lines before we put the on our shelves. Tata Harper is the most recent addition to our collection, receiving raving reviews from our staff including Kolya’s founder, Nicola. Here’s why she fell in love with Tata Harper Skincare:

At first, I valued the purity of the products and was intrigued with the complexity of botanicals in the formulas. Yet because of this, I expected an intense product that my skin would reject. Surprisingly they were very delicate, while still being effective. My skin delighted in the products, where it felt more fresh than it has in a while. My forever-cherry cheeks seemed a little more tempered too.

And I love the smells; a tender mix of herbal and floral scents.

Plus, Vermont holds a special place in my heart… When I apprenticed with Rosemary there, I was enchanted by the land, and loved that the place was FULL of practicing herbalists.
